October 3 was our very first First Friday coffee with me. We had a strong turnout. Thank you Dr. Insomnia for providing the coffee. We discussed how to provide a strong education for the many levels of students in any given grade. For example, a third grade class has students at grade level, but also has students at second or fifth grade level. Our teachers target each student by assessing their academic levels and provide homogeneous and heterogeneous instruction. The instructional focus on vocabulary and comprehension builds on the concepts. The continual focus on vocabulary and comprehension in all subject matter support all students, especially students that speak another language other than English at home.
One idea that came out of this discussion was to have parent tours into our classrooms. I will conduct our first parent tour on Friday, October 24. There will be two sessions: 9:15-10:00 and 11:00-11:45. Each session will consist of a 20 minute tour and 25 minute debrief/discussion. The tours will be capped at 6 parents (no younger siblings may attend). If you would like to participate in the classroom tours please call Carla in the office.
The second issue that was discussed was how to support students with homework. We are currently looking for a teacher to teach an afterschool homework club 2 days a week for an hour. One of our parents even volunteered to come in and tutor students in math at that time. As soon as we get the personnel we will send out permission slips for the program.
I look forward to seeing more parents at our next First Friday coffee on November 7.
All my best,
